Today we unveiled ‘Solstice,’ which resides outside the Ambassador Ballroom (between the 2nd and 3rd floors) at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI. This large custom sculpture was commissioned to represent the breadth and quality of regional artists. It brings the experience of the outdoors into the space, using organic shapes to create a scene from nature.
April envisioned it as a representation of the spirit of the city of Detroit, and the view of the Detroit River from the site. The multitude of colors that combine to create this image are symbolic of the city’s incredible diversity.
Viewable from multiple angles, the wall-mounted sculpture plays with the interaction of abstract and representative shapes. From a distance, the viewer sees a natural scene with glistening water, sunshine, and birds. Up close, the piece reveals itself to be a deliberately placed collection of colored glass curls.
April’s work is unique in its ability to capture the viewer’s imagination from any angle or perspective.
