The new pedestrian walkway and cycle bridge across the River Lea near the Athletes’ Village in east London features a swirling design using silver and coloured recycled glass.
It was created by award-winning local artist Martin Richman, who calls the design ‘One Whirl’ and says it represents ‘the unravelling of the coiled energy that a competitor brings to an event’.
Richman, from Hackney, is a former student of St Martin’s College of Art who worked as a lighting designer for the likes of Pink Floyd before going on to study painting.
He was one of two artists selected from over 250 applications by the Olympic Delivery Authority to incorporate public art into the new bridges and underpasses being built in the Olympic Park around the stadium in Stratford.
