PRESS RELEASE: CHIHULY’S MASTER GAFFER TO DEMONSTRATE AT LOCAL STUDIO
to kick off the 2003 april celebration of michigan glass month, epiphany artist, april wagner invited world renowned glass artist james mongrain to her private studio in pontiac, mi. mongrain will be demonstrating and giving workshops, which are open to the public, april 3rd through april 5th, 2003
james mongrain may best be known as the master gaffer, or glassblower, to dale chihuly, a job heís had since 1996. mongrain has blown most of chihulyís museum scale pieces, and has traveled the world making them. considered an american master, mongrain has worked with numerous artists, bringing their ideas to fruition in glass; including kiki smith, jeff koons, and walter lieberman. mongrain has also taught at many of the best school glass school across the country, including pilchuck and penland.it is a rare and special opportunity for mongrain to be at the epiphany studio. it will be the first time that he has ever given demonstrations at a studio in the midwest.the epiphany studio is open to the public only twice a year, once for michigan glass month and once during the holidays. every year a national acclaimed guest artist is invited to demonstrate at the studio. past guests have included italian artist lucio bubacco, as well as kentucky artist stephan powell.

workshops in venetian style glassblowing will be given on thursday april 3rd. glassblowing experience is mandatory. class size is limited and there is a small fee. there will be a reception from 5 ñ 10pm on friday, april 4th, 2003, open to the public, with demonstrations by mongrain, wagner, and ruff. hors díouevres and libations will be served. on display will be works from the epiphany collection. on saturday, april 5th from 12-6pm there will be an open studio with demonstrations. families welcome. the studio is located a quarter mile east of the intersection of old telegraph and orchard lake rd in pontiac.
